by Antonio Garrido-Marijuan, Tecnalia, Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA), Olaia Eguiarte, ENEDI Research Group, Department of Energy, Roberto Garay-Martinez, Tecnalia, Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA), Margus Raud, Gren Tartu AS, 51014 Tartu, Estonia, and Indrek Hagu, Gren Tartu AS, 51014 Tartu, Estonia. Abstract Tartu DH network (Estonia), with the demo area highlighted in blue. District heating networks are considered to be a key element for the decarbonization of Europe. The RELaTED project seeks to contribute to the decarbonization of these infrastructures with the demonstration of low temperature district heating networks. One of the demonstration sites consists of more than 50 substations within a subsection of a larger network in the city of Tartu (Estonia), where the [...]

Advancing District Heating & Cooling Solutions and Uptake in European Cities

Celsius Initiative has collected and analysed the EU funded projects in the sector of district heating and cooling that are innovative in the recently published Overview of Support Activities and Projects of the European Commission on District Heating & Cooling. This brochure provides a high-level overview and analysis of the projects, including RELaTED project. A growing number of cities worldwide are adopting modern district energy solutions, as the best way to bring sustainable heating and cooling to these dense urban areas. The refurbishment, construction and expansion of district energy network, combining district heating and district cooling, integrating and balancing a large share of renewable power, serving as thermal storage, are prerequisites for the smart energy systems of the future. The [...]

Energy meters in District-Heating Substations for Heat Consumption Characterization and Prediction Using Machine-Learning Techniques

The use of smart energy meters enables the monitoring of large quantity of data related to heat consumption patterns in buildings connected to DH networks. This information can be used to understand the interaction between building and the final users´ without accurate information about building characteristics and occupational rates. In this paper, presented at Beyond 2020 digital event, an intuitive and clarifier data-driven model is presented, which couples heat demand and weather variables. This model enables the disaggregation of Space-Heating & Domestic Hot water demand, characterization of the total heat demand and the forecasting for the next hours. Simulations for 53 building have been carried out, with satisfactory results for most of them, reaching R2 values above 0.9 in some [...]

Energy & economic assessment of façade-integrated solar thermal systems combined with ultra-low temperature district-heating

Authors: Roberto Garay, project coordinator of RELaTED and Mikel Lumbreras, researcher at TECNALIA, Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA). This paper, published in the journal Renewable Energy (Volume 159, October 2020, Pages 1000-1014), conducts an energy and economic assessment of District Heating (DH) integrated Solar Thermal (ST) systems. An implementation with building-integrated ST collectors coupled to a Low Temperature District Heating (LTDH) system is studied, with special focus on unglazed collectors. ST heat is exploited in the building through direct use, while excess heat is delivered to the network. A novel control strategy for heat flows in the system is proposed. A meta-analysis of several DH configurations, interconnection schemes and installed ST capacity is performed in three different climates: Sevilla (Spain), [...]

Unglazed Solar Thermal Systems for Building Integration, coupled with District Heating Systems

The connection of a solar thermal (ST) façade system to a district heating system allow for the direct use of ST heat in the building, while taking profit from the network for delivery/selling of excess heat and purchase of heat during periods of underproduction. The use of unglazed collectors for low-intrusive architectural interaction in façades is discussed. Studies are carried out on the heat production of the system and its capacity to cope with local demands. Economic studies are carried out in order to balance the investment and operational costs/profits of the system. In this paper, presented in the ICAE conference in Donostia-San Sebastian, the energy performance of a solar thermal (ST) façade system is studied in relation to its [...]
